An Early Look at 2011 Commitments: DT Mustfa Jalil

Mustfa Jalil is one of the highly touted prospects that Cal has received a verbal commitment for in the 2011 class. The 4 star prospect is rated as the #18 defensive tackle in his class and #192 overall on rivals.com.

When I watched Jalil on film, one thing became blatantly obvious, he dominates high school football with little ease. He often bull rushes the guard or center and pushes them straight into the backfield allowing himself or others to make the play. He will sometimes use a swim move to get by his man, but it is obvious that he is vastly physically superior to his competition and has little trouble pushing the offensive lineman 4 to 5 yards into the backfield right on the snap. Jalil in high school looks like a man among boys.

It will be interesting to see how Jalil responds when he has to face much stronger competition when he comes to Cal. He will still be able to use his raw strength but he will likely have to learn more moves and becomes much more polished in order to be successful. Players like Jalil usually need some time to develop because they can't just physically dominate their opponents like in high school. Jalil certainly has the physical tools to be successful, but once he gets to Berkeley, he will have to work hard with coaches in order to adjust to level of competition.
