2010 Position By Position Breakdown: Safeties

Focusing on the second half of the Cal secondary, we are going to look at the safeties today. The strong safety position will be filled by junior Sean Cattouse. Cattouse is an absolute hitter that loves to finish off receivers coming across the middle. The problem with Cattouse last season is that he did not play enough. He only started the last six games of the year and really could have provided the secondary with more stability had Cal went to him earlier on. He finished the season receiving All Pac-10 honorable mention honors.

At the free safety position, coach Tedford has said that senior Chris Conte will likely start at the position. Conte, a converted corner is another big safety at 6'3, 212 lbs. The good part about Conte is that he can also hit and separate the ball from the receiver. His best season was actually his sophomore season when he was a reserve corner and played primarily nickle back. I think that Conte will thrive at his new position as he is fast enough to cover the slot receiver and big enough to provide support in the run.

Junior DJ Campbell also played in all but one game last season and will provide depth and experience at the position. He had a nose for recovering fumbles last season as he recovered two in limited playing time.  CJ Moncrease is also a strong hitter and played primarily on special teams last season. Incoming freshman Keenan Allen may see some time at safety as he was considered one of top athlete recruits in the country and saw a lot of time at safety during high school.  However, Cal recruited Allen as a wide receiver, so it is likey Allen will mostly see time on the offensive side of the ball.
