2010 Position by Position Breakdown: Fullback

Will Kapp, John Tyndall, and Eric Stevens will all look to fill the fullback position vacated by Brian Holley. Reports from spring say that all three will likely fill the position by committee. None of the three saw significant playing time at the position last season and were mostly special teams contributors. Kapp is the smallest, but it seems that he is the best blocker of the bunch and that may be all Cal needs at the position.  Tyndall seems to have a mean streak and looks to knock the opposition on their backside, however at this point in time, Kapp is better at blocking fundamentals than Tyndall. Stevens seems to be the best receiver of the bunch and also the fastest. If Stevens is able to become an adequate blocker, then he may be the one to get the most playing time. Stevens may give Cal the extra dimension it needs out of the backfield. When Cal was successful with Boller and Rodgers, Tedford would often call rollouts with the short option gong to the fullback. If Tedford plans to use Riley in the same way, one of the fullbacks are going to need to prove that they can catch the ball out of the backfield and get positive yards.  Hopefully one of these guys will step up and become an adequate blocker in leading the way for Vereen, protecting Riley and providing an option out of the backfield in the passing game. My bet says it is Stevens because he had the best spring.
